If you feel that the number of burned calories shown in your GoBe app doesn’t reflect your actual activity, there may be a few reasons behind it. Let’s go over how GoBe calculates calorie burn and how to improve its accuracy.
How GoBe Tracks Calorie Burn
GoBe calculates energy burn using a combination of:
your heart rate and pulse,
your anthropometric data (like weight, height, and age),
and detected activity patterns throughout the day.
This allows the algorithm to measure not only cardio-based activity, but also sedentary workouts like strength training, push-ups, or stretching, which may not involve intense movement but still require energy.
Why Calorie Burn May Seem Inaccurate
There are two main situations where calorie burn readings may be distorted:
1. Elevated heart rate not related to activity
If your heart rate increases due to stress, medical conditions, or a sensor misreading - and not from physical movement - the algorithm may interpret this as calorie-burning activity, reducing accuracy.
2. Poor contact with the skin or incorrect band position
For GoBe to collect accurate pulse data, the band needs to be worn correctly and consistently. If the device isn't worn properly or is frequently removed, the data may be incomplete or less precise.
3. Heart rate and activity dynamics
Energy expenditure depends not only on peak heart rate, but also on:
average heart rate during activity, duration of continuous activity, intensity of movement.
For example, a longer activity with a higher average heart rate will result in greater calorie burn than a short activity with the same peak heart rate.
In addition, the algorithm regularly recalculates your resting heart rate (when you remain inactive for at least 10 minutes). This helps personalize calculations, but may lead to differences in calorie burn between days, even with similar activity levels.
It is also important to note that trained users (athletes) often have a lower resting heart rate and a different cardiovascular response to exercise. As a result, calorie burn may differ from average values even under similar conditions — this is normal and accounted for by the algorithm.
Tips to Improve Calorie Burn Accuracy
To ensure GoBe collects the most accurate data, please follow these recommendations:
Wear the band 22 to 23 hours per day, removing it only for charging
Position the band correctly – it should sit two fingers or more above your wrist bone
Adjust the strap so that it is snug but comfortable – the sensor should have stable contact with your skin without causing discomfort
Summary - Common Reasons for Inaccurate Calorie Burn
Elevated heart rate from stress or other non-activity sources
Improper sensor contact or loose strap
Band not worn consistently throughout the day
Following the correct wearing guidelines helps the algorithm track your body more accurately and reflect calorie burn with better precision.
