If your GoBe app shows a negative energy balance but your weight is going up, you're not alone, and it doesn’t necessarily mean your device is malfunctioning. Let's go over what might be happening and how to interpret your data correctly.
What Does a Negative Energy Balance Mean?
A negative energy balance means that, according to GoBe, your calorie burn exceeded your calorie intake for the day.
This can happen not only when calorie intake is underestimated but also when your energy burn is elevated, which may occur due to:
physical activity
emotional stress
lack of sleep
cold exposure
elevated heart rate (from exercise or medical conditions)
long breaks between meals, fasting, or dieting
GoBe tracks energy not only from food but also from your internal reserves. When your body uses fat or glycogen stores, it still absorbs energy, and GoBe reflects this as energy burn.
Why Might Calorie Intake Be Underestimated?
There are a few reasons why GoBe might show lower calorie intake than expected.
1. You're still in the learning period
If you recently started using GoBe, keep in mind there is an adaptation period that can last up to 2 weeks or more. During this time, the device is collecting baseline data about your body to improve accuracy. The more consistently you wear GoBe, the more precise the readings will become.
2. You haven't added enough weigh-ins
Regular weight entries help the algorithm automatically calibrate your data. We recommend logging at least 5 weigh-ins in the past 2 weeks through the app. This helps the algorithm adjust to your current body metrics and improves tracking accuracy.
How GoBe Tracks Calorie Intake
GoBe does not register calories when you eat, but rather when nutrients are absorbed into your bloodstream. This happens as part of the digestion process, which can take several hours.
Typical digestion and absorption times:
1 to 2 hours - food is broken down
3 to 4 hours - food is processed by digestive fluids
4 to 8 hours - digestion continues
5 to 9 hours or more - nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream
These stages often overlap. For example, a sugary snack may be absorbed in 15 to 30 minutes, while a complex meal with meat and sides may take 9 to 10 hours. Some nutrients from one meal may be absorbed alongside the next one.
GoBe Also Measures Energy From Internal Reserves
When you are fasting, exercising, or eating less than usual, GoBe will register energy absorbed from internal sources, such as fat or glycogen. This is a normal function of the body and is reflected in your energy burn data.
Final Data Is Available the Next Day
Your calorie intake and energy balance data is finalized after 12 PM the following day. The algorithm needs time to process and integrate all collected data to give you the most accurate result.
Summary - Why You Might See Weight Gain Despite a Negative Balance
natural weight fluctuations or water retention
energy burn from internal reserves rather than food
learning period not yet complete
not enough weigh-ins for accurate calibration
today’s data not fully processed until tomorrow
What You Can Do
Wear your GoBe 22 to 23 hours a day
Make sure the sensor fits snugly against your skin
Add weight measurements at least 5 times in 2 weeks
Check your calorie balance after 12 PM the next day
If following a special diet (like keto or intermittent fasting), expect minor deviations
