A common question among GoBe users is how the device tracks calories consumed through alcoholic beverages. It's important to understand that while GoBe aims to give you a comprehensive picture of your energy intake, its approach to alcohol calories is specific.
How GoBe Tracks Alcohol-Related Calories
GoBe is designed to recognize and count calories derived from carbohydrates present in alcoholic beverages. This includes the sugars found in:
Sodas or juices mixed with spirits
Wine
Beer
Flavored liquors
Essentially, if an alcoholic drink contains sugars or other carbohydrates, GoBe will account for those calories as part of your overall intake.
Why Pure Alcohol Calories Aren't Tracked Directly
However, GoBe currently does not directly count calories received through the digestion of pure alcohol itself. This is because alcohol affects the blood glucose curve in a fundamentally different way compared to carbohydrates, proteins, and fats – the primary macronutrients from which GoBe derives its calorie measurements. The unique metabolic pathway of alcohol doesn't fit the same pattern that GoBe's algorithms use to detect typical food-derived energy.
In summary: GoBe will capture the calories from the non-alcoholic components (like sugars) in your alcoholic drinks, but not the calories from the alcohol content itself. Keep this in mind when reviewing your energy intake data after consuming alcoholic beverages.
