A scientific study from Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) confirms what many users intuitively feel: when you're dehydrated, stress feels stronger — and it might even affect your long-term health.
What Did the Study Find?
The researchers tracked healthy adults over a week. Participants were divided into two groups:
Low-fluid group: drank less than 1.5 L per day
High-fluid group: drank 2 L (women) or 2.5 L (men) per day
Both groups were exposed to the same psychological stress test (a mock job interview + mental tasks).
Key finding:
The low-fluid group had a 50% higher spike in cortisol, the body’s main stress hormone. Even though both groups felt equally anxious, only the dehydrated participants showed such a strong physiological stress response.
Why is that important?
Elevated cortisol over time is linked to heart disease, depression, and metabolic issues.
Why Does Dehydration Affect Stress?
The body uses a hormone called vasopressin to conserve water during dehydration. Vasopressin also interacts with your brain’s stress center (the hypothalamus) and increases cortisol levels.
So, when hydration drops, your body may interpret it as a threat, triggering a stronger stress response.
